Chapter Six

April paused outside Cale’s office door and took a moment to compose herself. She looked down at the red folder holding a thin sheaf of papers she held and breathed deep. Everything they had agreed on was inside. They had passed emails and phone calls back and forth. There wasn’t any reason for her to be nervous or to think Cale would change his mind at this late date. After all, she had given notice at her job, and she had been offered two different positions in Atlanta. She only needed to accept one.

Her hand shook as she reached for the doorknob, and she frowned. Get it the hell together, girl. This is what you wanted. You’re getting it, and sex with Cale was in a word—incredible.

She drew in another breath and blew it out, then threw open the door. Red and blue, April thought incoherently. Cale’s blue eyes met hers as he sat behind his desk, but her gaze skittered away to the fiery redhead who perched on the end of his desk. Long, shapely legs were fully exposed because of a miniskirt that couldn’t be regulation length. Five-inch, sexy heels and a dress shirt that was unbuttoned enough to show off a generous cleavage completed the ensemble.

April hated her right off the bat. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you were busy. I thought we were meeting at this time.”

“We are. Come in.” Cale stood and moved around the desk. “April, let me introduce you to Karen Stapleton, my colleague. Karen, this is an old friend, April West. Karen teaches Molecular and Cellular Physiology.”

So there was a brain to go with the body. Great. April forced a smile. “Nice to meet you.”

“Likewise.” Karen’s assessing gaze passed over April, and she tilted her head to the side. “You don’t look like you run in our circle.”

April’s mouth dropped open. “Excuse me?”

“Karen!” Cale’s eyes narrowed in anger.

“Oh, I’m so sorry.” Karen raised a long, delicate hand to her mouth and then rested it on her chest. “I can’t believe I said something like that. I’m so used to putting these arrogant little privileged pricks in their place.”

Despite herself, April snickered. “Well, I’m none of the above, but even if I was, you wouldn’t put me anywhere. Thanks, though.”

Karen’s face reddened. She whirled to face Cale and grasped his arm before kissing his cheek. Afterward, she wiped lipstick from the spot with her thumb. “I’ll call you later, Cale.”

Karen sashayed from the room in a cloud of perfume and hairspray. April faced Cale. “I asked you if you were seeing anyone. I’m not in the habit of helping a man to cheat!”

“But you are in the habit of jumping to conclusions,” he shot back and took his seat.

She glared at him while trying to get a hold of her emotions. “You’re saying you’re not involved with her?”

“That’s correct.” His calm manner annoyed her, and she sank into the seat on the opposite side of his desk to slap the folder in front of him.
